The Big Rusty Lie

Table of contents

A novel, written by Ryan Speck and released through the Curbstomp Press imprint, about Bernardo Walterhaus, an eccentric and wild detective attempting to solve the kidnapping of young heiress Louissa Marianna Archipelligo after his escape from The Lombardo Institute For The Mentally Sub-Standard, leading him through a strange cast of villains, ne'er-do-well's, and other characters. The novel, of course, takes place in Oberwalz and, along with "The Thin Blue Grime", is a major foundation of the concepts behind the city.

History

Originally started for a local Fayetteville, GA, poetry night in 1998 or 1999, the story's humble beginnings are fairly well echoed in the final version, rewritten and finished most of a decade later. Much of the plot changed, having mostly been forgotten until the original notes were found after the damned thing was completley written, the original revolving more around the never-ending search for the missing heiress, as every wrong turn took Bernardo to yet another criminal or strange happening (much like the book turned out to be but even moreso). The sequel to The Big Rusty Lie, The Black Smoking Gun Of Temptation, was planned for 2008 but pushed back into 2009, continuing the plots and themes from Rusty Lie, but adding in romantic interests, more character details, and revenge upon Bernardo by his enemies.
